Pick any song from Johnny Cash's back catalogue and it will still hit you square in the gut like a fist thrown in a bar fight or the first whiskey the morning after.
His baritone drawl and his penchant for black clothes and certain substances has him painted as a kind of masculine anti-hero. But let’s not forget he was an incredible songwriter and performer, a man who could craft music that spoke of the frustration and despair of the otherwise forgotten while still being fresh and subtle and fun in all the right places. Mr Cash was a true artist.
So maybe that’s why when we first heard Jacques Marie Mage were putting out a couple of frames in collaboration with the Cash estate we were like: yep, that makes sense. Because it does.
Like Cash’s back catalogue, many of JMM’s most popular frames are uncompromising and masculine. They’re big and bold and blocky feats of acetate design. But look closer, and you’ll see the true artist: the deft design and care that goes into every last frame.
Unsurprisingly, the new Johnny Cash collection by Jacques Marie Mage hits you square in the gut too. Made up of two frames, the Quentin and the Cash, it brings together strong acetate silhouettes with careful craftmanship and knowing details. Did you notice the special hatchet-shaped front pin, for example?
