When we think of Cutler and Gross, it’s hard not to think of bold design, impeccable craftsmanship, and true British style. Born in the capital back in 1969, this iconic eyewear house has been shaping how we see (and look) for over half a century, with designs that feel just as fresh today as they did on day one.
So, who better to guide us around the Big Smoke than the Cutler and Gross team themselves? In this latest instalment of our Seen city guides, they’ve curated their must-visit London spots—an insider’s take on the city they call home. From iconic institutions to hidden gems, it’s a lineup that reflects the same sharp eye for detail we see in their frames.
We’ve proudly stocked Cutler and Gross for years, so it feels extra special to share this exclusive snapshot of London life through their lens. A huge thank you to the team for pulling back the curtain on their city—you’ll definitely want to bookmark this one before your next trip to the city.
The Cutler and Gross Guide to London, UK
Since 1969, Cutler and Gross has been synonymous with London’s creative spirit, so it was only right to highlight our top places in the colourful metropolis. We have two flagship stores in the capital city—Knightsbridge, where we opened our first store and back then, workshop in 1971 and Spitalfields, opened in 2015 in the bustling epicentre of East.
With London being so crucial to our DNA, we’ve curated an insider’s guide to the city, leading you from Spitalfields to Knightsbridge through some of our most treasured locations.
Spitalfields: Gilbert, George, and a Side of Record Shopping
Off the beaten paths of eclectic vintage markets and 24-hour bagel shops lies a vibrant hub for art and music aficionados.
A recent interest of ours is the Gilbert and George Centre, which opened in 2023. Tucked behind Brick Lane, it’s a calm, almost hidden space filled with the duo’s bold, provocative art. It’s our ideal place to start wandering East London.
No visit to East London is complete without exploring the legendary Rough Trade. First opened in 1976, this record store chain is a global phenomenon, known for its rough-around-the-edges appeal and world-class stock of vinyl and CDs. Our history is steeped in music influence, so for us, skimming LPs or heading to one of their events is a given.
Central London: Where Pork Chops Meet Rock'n'Roll
For those looking for a faster pace in their step, the streets of Central London are paved in stories.
After work, the best of British dining waits at two of our favourites—St. JOHN in Farringdon, and The Quality Chop House down the road, both specialising in quality fare and traditional recipes.
For something a little unexpected, we love the Sir John Soane’s Museum in Holborn. One of London’s lesser-known haunts, this extraordinary house features the personal collection of Bank of England architect, Sir John Soane. Lose your way among the sculptures, architectural models, drawings and paintings that span floor to ceiling.
And while you’re in Soho, make time to visit our friends at The Great Frog. First opened in the 70s, TGF is a family-run jeweller, notorious for rock’n’roll inspired designs and metalwork all handcrafted in their shop-come-workshop.
Knightsbridge: Photos, Japan, and a Park-Side Pause
Knightsbridge will always be special to us. A vision of luxury department stores, elegant architecture and high octane restaurants comes to mind, but for us it’s the hub where we began.
The Victoria and Albert Museum is a firm go-to, particularly their Photography Centre. With a collection of over 800,000 images, from Man Ray to Cindy Sherman, it’s a constant source of inspiration. The V&A’s new Storehouse in East London is also worth a trip if you want a rare peek behind the scenes and to feel at one with their curators and conservators.
Nearby, you’ll find Japan House London, a gem that brings our fix of intricate design and extreme craftsmanship. It’s beautifully curated inside and the ever-changing exhibitions truly feels like stepping into a different world entirely.
While West, round off your trip with a peaceful stroll through Hyde Park. It’s our founder Graham Cutler’s favourite place to sit and take in the scenery.
For the team at Cutler and Gross, London is best experienced through its vibrant communities, each brimming with unique character. From the energy of Spitalfields to the timeless elegance of Knightsbridge, we find inspiration in each corner.
We hope you enjoyed Cutler and Gross’ guide to London. Don't forget, you can shop our Cutler and Gross collection online and at our Police Street store in Manchester.
